Fulham drew 1-1 at Craven Cottage, a goal from Tom Cairney was enough to all but seal a Play-Off spot.

Fulham drew 1-1 with Brentford in the West London derby in their Saturday 3pm kick off. An early goal from Tom Cairney, with an assist by Ryan Sessegnon gave the Whites the lead. Brentford hit back through Nico Yennaris on the break.

Tom Cairney had a chance to double Fulham’s lead just before halftime, but had a penalty saved by Daniel Bentley.

The Whites needed a win to ensure a Play-Off Spot, however, matching Leeds United’s result was enough in the end. They drew 3-3 at Elland Road against Norwich City.

With four wins on the spin, Fulham were full of confidence coming into this game. Last time out the Whites beat Huddersfield in an impressive 4-1 victory up in Yorkshire. Scott Malone and Cairney scored before Stefan Johansen grabbed a brace to take all three points back to London.

Brentford had also been enjoying their own good spell of form and they were without defeat in their previous seven games and were looking to put a dent Fulham’s promotion bid in this feisty West London derby.

Last Saturday Brentford beat QPR in another local derby at Griffin Park winning 3-1.

The match kicked off and the Whites started the better of the two, probing the Bees’ back line. First was Floyd Ayité attempting a cross from the right of the box, before Scott Malone treid to get into the area down the opposite side.

The breakthrough goal came in the eighth minute, with the Whites making the most of their pressure. Sone Aluko picked the ball up in midfield and attempted to slot a through ball to Sessegnon. A blue shirt slid in and stop the move but only for a fleeting moment.

Aluko pounced on the ball once more, and this time he successfully guided a pass through to Sessegnon left of the goal.

The 16 year old pulled an exquisite ball across the box and Cairney hammered it past Daniel Bentley from inside the area into the bottom right hand corner to break the deadlock and make it 1-0.

It didn’t take long for Cairney to try sniff out another goal. Sessegnon linked up well with Johansen down the left once more, he pulled a ball back to Cairney waiting at the edge of the area. The Scotsman tried to curl the ball into the top left but it sailed a foot over the bar.

Brentford showed their first attacking threat and Marcus Bettinelli was called into action. Lasse Vibe unleased a shot from outside the area and Bettinelli made a good save to keep the Whites ahead.

The game exploded into life and became basketball-like, with both teams attacking hard. Cairney won the ball in midfield and tried to set Aluko off down the right and had aanother shot blocked inside the area.

Sessegnon was causing problems for Harlee Dean, in the 18th minute he was almost through on goal before a last ditch tackle prevented him from getting his shot away.

Brentford cleared their lines but it was the Whites attacking again, Ryan Fredericks sprinted down the left and squeezed a through ball to Ayité, he shot on target but the tight angle didn’t give him much hope of scoring.

Four minutes on and the crowd had thought Fulham had doubled the lead. Johansen played a ball from a corner to Ayité on his own, he slammed it into the net but the referee decided one of the Whites’ had committed a foul.

Ayité looked sure to score in his next attack moments later, he slipped through the defenders holding a high-line, and with only the keeper to beat he smashed it high.

A third of the way through the match Fulham looked to tighten their grip on the game. Kevin McDonald had a chance blocked, before Malone sent a teasing ball forward that no attacker could get their head on.

With Fulham committing so many men forward, Brentford scored on the break. Yennaris slotted a ball past Bettinelli with a hard shot to level the score and making it one goal apiece.

Fulham attempted to gain their advantage back straight away. Sessegnon broke down the left, got past his defender and skipped into the box before pulling a ball back to Cairney, mirroring the first goal.

Cairney fired a shot and it was blocked by the defender, it could have caused serious problems for the Bees as Bentley didn’t look like he was going to get there.

Four minutes before the break and Fulham had another golden chance. Fredericks sprinted past both Yohann Barbet and Tom Field, before putting in a lofty ball. Ayité , the only man in the box headed it inches past the left upright.

On the stroke of 45 minutes the Whites mounted another dangerous attack. Johansen pulled a ball back in from the right to Ayité, and a crunching late tackle game in. Ayité caught the ball at the edge of the area, turned, and with the obvious advantage gone the ref blew his whistle for a penalty to the crowds delight.

Johansen had to go off for treatment and Cairney stepped up to the penalty spot. He shot low hard and right, but Bentley guessed the correct way and pushed the ball back into play.

Cairney sprung on the ball but Bentley got up and managed to take it in his gloves to deny Fulham and Cairney a second.

Brentford got the match under way for the second half and it was them with the initial attack. Jota appeared through of goal and Tim Ream raced back to dispossess the Brentford attacker.

Five minutes passed and Cairney attempted a trademark shot from the edge of the area, he fired an effort at the top corner and Bentley made a good save. Two minutes later he had a similar effort, this time further out and Bentley was equal to it.

Ten minutes into the half and Fulham were playing around the Brentford box, attacking the Hammersmith End. Johansen was next with a shot that looked like it was going to creep into the top left corner, but missed by a matter of inches.

Malone was next to have a pop, just inside the area he dragged the ball past his defender, changing direction quickly and firing wide at the hour mark.

The Whites pressure increased with their corner count, spending most of their time camped in Brentford’s final third.

In the 65th minute Vibe made a run on his own again, straight at Ream. Bettinelli got low quickly and made a good save.

The Whites were starving Brentford of possession and attempting to get balls in from either side. Aluko tried to squeeze through the defence and got in on goal, however, lost control of the ball at the vital second under pressure, and could only poke his effort at the keeper.

Brentford had found their feet, and caused their own problems. Bettinelli was called into action to make two important saves from either side of the goal.

The final ten was end to end and the tension was palpable. Neeskins Kebano who had been brought on as a subsitute, forced a corner. Johansen curled the ball in and Piazon, also brought on looking for the win was inches from getting a head to the ball.

The whistle finally blew and the fans cheered as a point was well earned , and then with the news filtering through that Leeds had drawn their match the stadium erupted. Fulham have made the Play-Offs.
